Fast Facts on Fort Mill, SC

Located in both York and Lancaster counties, Fort Mill is a fast-growing suburb of Charlotte.

While Catawba Indians had lived in present-day Fort Mill for many years, the Scotch-Irish started settling the area in the mid 1700s.

During the 1800s, the town experienced major population growth, primarily because of the textile mills in the area.

When the town of Fort Mill was initially established in 1873, it took its name from a colonial-era built British fort and grist mill by the same name on the nearby Steele Creek.

Over the years, Fort Mill has established quite a name for itself in the history books.

For instance, the town was the site of the last Confederate Government Cabinet meeting in 1865. And in the late 1980s, it was the home to TV evangelist Jim Bakker’s now defunct Heritage USA.

This South Carolina town had a population of about 10,811 as of the 2010 Census, although another 25,000 live in the immediate vicinity.

Today, this community is home to many major businesses, including Continental Tire the Americas LLC and Muzak Holdings.

Other businesses that have located in this 4.6-square-mile community include:

  • Springs Industries
  • URS Corporation's Nuclear Center
  • Carolina Crown Drum and Bugle Corps.
