Fast Facts on the History of Monroe, NC

This Union County city became incorporated in 1844. Just prior to that, in 1842 it became somewhat of a county seat as folks from Anson and eastern Mecklenburg thought it was too inconvenient to travel to Charlotte.

The city was named for James Monroe, who was the country’s fifth president.

After incorporation in 1844, Monroe became a railroad hub for surrounding areas.

The city was also home to the Starlite Speedway from the 1960s to 1970s.

Another claim to fame for the city is that it was the hometown of Jesse Helms, the late U.S. Senator from North Carolina who served five terms (1973 to 2003) in the Senate.

Helms was quite a prominent politician and was a national leader of the Religious Right wing of the Republican Party.

In addition, Monroe is the manufacturing hub for both Ludwig drums and timpani.
